Same as last time. Below are two reverse alphabetical lists -- one of the first sentence in each of the second-half challenge entries, and one of the last sentences. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to match them up in pairs WITHOUT looking at the posted fic on ds_flashfiction and WITHOUT looking at others' comments! Which head goes with which tail?

Extra super bonus STETSON points if you can guess the story too! \o/

First lines of fic from the second-half of DS Match 2008

  1. A few feet away from the corpse, there was a strange sort of mark on the edge of the pond.

  2. Around ten on a Friday evening, I heard the front door slam.

  3. Benton Fraser walked up the stairs to the bullpen and tried not to feel excited about seeing Ray Vecchio.

  4. “I would like to come visit you,” Benny said.

  5. In the silent minutes before he falls asleep at night, Ray can sometimes hear a faint crackle.

  6. It all started… well.

  7. Maggie had just finished her coffee when the door to the cafe opened, causing the bell mounted above it to jingle.

  8. Math was never Ray's strong suit in school.

  9. Mrfpztztt accessed the database to interpret what he was getting via the sensor.

  10. Ray was ignoring him.

  11. Ray's quiet the morning he finally gets hitched.

  12. The first time, Ray was five years old.

  13. The things that wake Ray up are the smells.

  14. You've always done what you were told to do.

Last lines of fic from the second-half of DS Match 2008

  1. A moment later, two dark, sleekly-furred shapes slid into the moonlit pond, together.

  2. And that will be exactly, exactly what Fraser wants.

  3. “Anticlimactic.”

  4. As if the world is standing still, waiting for her.

  5. As long as Fraser could be here with Ray, could sweep him up, laughing, in the waltz that was the next track on the CD, he was content.

  6. He will listen to the silent, inevitable force of children growing up.

  7. Hopefully, the argument will finish up before the Aldouin brothers do figure out how to perform turtle related voodoo.

  8. I kept it inside and just kissed him goodnight.

  9. I was five years old, and it was summer in Chicago...

  10. It was going to be fun.

  11. "Next time," he says, and there's nothing on this earth Ray wouldn't do to keep that happiness on his face. "Yes. Right."

  12. Right then, he just accepted the comfort and pleasure of the morning.

  13. The sea was still calling but this time Fraser had a reason to answer and someone to answer with.

Obviously I didn't see yours till after I posted mine. But, no worries! I can't brain most days, actually, so when I have a refreshing moment of clarity, I have to capitalize on it. :)

I wrote my guesses down in a notebook first. I was determined to defend my first-place standings after round 1. :) (Which, not such a huge accomplishment as only a handful of people even tried. I wish more had tried it!) And I did make some amusing errors in the first round. :)
